How Twean uses your data, in plain words. Last updated 5 October 2026.
The short version
- Your memories are private unless you share a path or pass a memory.
- No ads, no tracking, and we never sell your data.
- AI features (path suggestions and smart search) are optional. They send some of your data to Anthropic, the AI provider, and you can turn them off.
- You can export everything, or delete your account, at any time in Settings.
What Twean keeps
- Your account: username, the name you choose (optional), email address, and your password, stored only as a secure hash.
- Your memories: what you type, say or snap, the path you put it on, when you stored it and your timezone, how you captured it, pins and recall times.
- Location: only if you allow it on the Store screen. It's saved with each memory so it can appear on your map.
- People: your connections and requests, and the memories you pass or are passed.
- Devices: a sign-in cookie, and a notification address for each device where you turn notifications on.
Who can see what
- Only you see your memories, paths, photos and locations, unless you do one of the things below.
- Share a path: anyone with its link can see the text of the memories on it. Photos and locations are never shown there.
- Pass a memory: the person gets a copy of its text, path name and photo. Your location is never passed. You can see who you passed it to; they keep their copy even if you delete yours.
- Connections see your username and name. People who aren't connected to you only see your username.
AI: path suggestions and smart search
Twean uses AI from Anthropic for two things.
Path suggestions. When you name a memory, the AI suggests paths for it. For that, Twean sends:
- the memory you're writing
- the time, your timezone and, if you allowed it, your location
- your path names and how many memories are on each
- your 15 most recent memories (their text, path, when, and how far from where you are now)
Smart search. When you store or edit a memory, its text and path name are sent so the AI can add hidden search words. For example, “Terminator 2” also gets “film, Arnold Schwarzenegger, 1991”, so searching “Schwarzenegger” finds it. The words are kept with your memory and only used for your own search. Memories stored before you turn this on are processed too.
It never sends your email, password or account details, and memories in your trash are never sent. The AI only suggests: it never puts a memory on a path by itself.
Anthropic processes this to answer the request. Under its commercial terms, data sent through its API isn't used to train its models. See Anthropic's privacy policy for how it handles data.
To turn AI off: Settings → AI. Nothing is sent to Anthropic while it's off: the path box only lists your own paths, and new memories don't get hidden search words. Search words already made are kept, stored with your memories on Twean, and still help your search. If you turn AI back on, memories stored while it was off get them too.
Other services Twean uses
- Maps: map tiles come from OpenStreetMap, so your browser asks it for the area you're looking at. Your memories aren't sent.
- Notifications travel through your browser's push service (for example Google, Apple or Mozilla), encrypted.
- Email is sent from Twean's own mail server, only to confirm your address or reset your password.
Your choices
- Export: Settings → Export downloads all your memories, paths and photos.
- Delete a memory: it goes to ~Trash, and is deleted for good after 30 days, or straight away if you empty the trash.
- Delete your account: Settings → Delete account removes your account, memories, paths and photos.
